The most frequently used materials in the structure of ball bearings consist of stainless steel, chrome steel and ceramic. There are numerous pictures of ball bearings, McGill bearings, MRC bearings and "Browning bearings" over the Internet. The craftsmanship and accuracy can be immediately valued. In fact probably because of the symmetry imposed by the circles and spheres, many look like beautiful high-end pieces of jewellery.

The greatest brands on the market namely Thomas bearings and the Koyo Bearings commonly appear to consist of two metal rings, one easily fitting inside the other. However, the gap between the rings is filled with small rotating metal balls. When at work, the points of contact and stress regularly change. The weight supported by ball bearings is known as ‘load’ but the pressure of that load can be exerted in two ways. Loading can be applied directly perpendicular and is called ‘thrust’ or it can be applied from varying angles and is called ‘radial’. Clearly ball bearings created to accommodate radial loads are a lot trickier. A ball bearing can be developed to suit each of these loads or various combinations entirely dependent on the actual specifications of the completed ball bearing.

One vital use for bearings in a automobile is in the engine, particularly Federal-Mogul bearings.  A number of the engine parts, such as the rod, the main, and the cam, depend on bearings to permit them to spin with as little friction as possible to reduce wear and heat, which is vital for the life of any engine.  The engine also uses a skf  bearing to help safely transfer its power to the car with as little energy loss as possible.

From the engine, power is transferred by way of the transmission, which is filled with bearings that make it function.  The bearings make it so that the transmission can forward the power to the appropriate place with the least amount of lost energy so that when you put the pedal down, you sense it on the road.

Yet another spot on a vehicle where bearings are crucial is the driveshaft.  The driveshaft rotates at thousands of revolutions per minute.  If it didn’t have bearings, such as Koyo Bearings, to permit it to spin with almost no friction, it would build up heat which would increase the wear speed.  This would result in a shorter lifespan and increased risk of serious failure.
